Triller comes down to earth

More male White-winged Trillers (Lalage sueurii) than usual in Tyto this season. Not such happy news for these excitable would-be breeders: fewer females than usual.

And because the males twitter hyperactively about the treetops - trying to attract females - it's been a trying time seeking a decent picture.

Today, at last, a bird foraging on the ground - with remarkable success.

One of many morsels grabbed in march across the grass.

Wonderful photos of the Triller. They are indeed a difficult bird to capture. Great timing to find one on the ground.

Hi Kerryn: more luck than timing. The timing was standing still long enough for the bird to more or less accept my decreasingly distant presence.

G'day Tony,
I always find the black and white birds 'smart' looking - willies and maggies etc. Yeah, my best WWTriller pic is a dark and light smudge high in some foliage!
Regards,
Gouldiae.
