Among 600,000 beetles there must be a toothy, strong-jawed Jonah?Tyto Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03834120720077625697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273239276262782106.post-57763445460395476672008-11-05T17:37:00.000+10:002008-11-05T17:37:00.000+10:00Great post Tony, top stuff.Great post Tony, top stuff.Duncanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12182951711946882353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273239276262782106.post-37176553118760210602008-11-05T14:28:00.000+10:002008-11-05T14:28:00.000+10:00That would have to be uncomfortable going down if ...That would have to be uncomfortable going down if swallowed whole.

I remember seeing photos of a bird which had swallowed something that ate it's way back out of the bird. Both sometimes seem to get them into trouble, don't they? It's also interesting their defences - 'barking' and sitting tight - against, say, a snake are even less effective than a beetle's.Tyto Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03834120720077625697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273239276262782106.post-49614096437770577592008-11-04T21:12:00.000+10:002008-11-04T21:12:00.000+10:00What a cunning bowerbird. I remember that once those beetles latch on, they're difficult to dislodge.

When I lived in Townsville, I remember investigating an awful racket coming from the back veranda. An ambitious green tree frog had taken on a male rhinoceros beetle. The beetle was hissing away and the frog was squealing because the beetle had dug in. They eventually sorted it out.Snailhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15063904446757916981noreply@blogger.com
